The Empty Space
The 2.8 x 5m large carpet was designed for the point in front of the Bode-Museum where a horse statue of Emperor Frederick III once stood. To visualize the historical reference of the location, in particular its connections with the Oriental culture, I made an exact reproduction of the ground area in form of a traditionally knotted carpet. To Combine historical and architectural with a haptic-sensory level, to cover the cold stone floor with the warm softened wool and silk mixture, creates a new perception of space on a material basis while at the same time conveying its historical origin.
